این مجموعه، داستان دو خانواده به نامهای مظاهری و سعادتی را روایت میکند. خانوادهی مظاهری شامل هوشنگ (محمد نادری) پدر خانواده، زهره (آتنه فقیه نصیری) مادر خانواده و کارمند بانک، سارا (ویدا جوان) دختر بزرگ که در آزمون تخّصص پزشکی مردود شده و سعید (امیر کاظمی) پسر بیکار خانواده است. خانوادهی سعادتی شامل عطا (حسن معجونی) پدر خانواده که با هوشنگ مشکلاتی دارد، شیرین (نگار عابدی) مادر خانواده و عرشیا (عرفان برزین) که یک پسر کوچکِ خبرچین و بازیگوش است، میشود. داستان به معضلات اجتماعی و فرهنگی بهطور مستقیم یا معکوس از طریق این دو خانواده میپردازد.
